Talk of the Town — July 1, 2026

New York is preparing for a heat wave. The city is expanding its cooling centers and urging common sense ahead of what could be a dangerously hot Fourth of July weekend. In Red Hook, the public pool remains closed.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mamdani and the City Council reached a deal on a $126 billion budget right at the deadline. The agreement will expand programs for housing vouchers and discounted transit fares for lower-income New Yorkers.

An exterminator found human remains in the chimney of a Queens middle school.

Elsewhere, Hillary Clinton made her debut with a symphony orchestra, narrating Aaron Copland’s “Lincoln Portrait” at Carnegie Hall. A New Jersey congressman returned to Washington after a long absence, which he attributed to depression. And a coach bus crash on the Long Island Expressway in Queens left two dead and twenty injured.
