This Week In NYC

July in New York means living outdoors. The city accommodates with a full schedule of free events designed for large crowds. Even the commute is getting an upgrade, as the MTA is bringing 50 free outdoor performances to Midtown this summer, moving its platform musicians above ground.

Film on the Lawn

The tradition of watching a movie on a blanket continues in several locations this week. Paramount+ Movie Nights are back in Bryant Park, turning Midtown’s most famous lawn into a theater. Across the river, Movies with a View returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park, where the backdrop often outshines the feature. Union Square also has its own Movies in the Square series for anyone downtown.

The main event is the skyline. The movie is a bonus.

The Week’s Agenda

For music, SummerStage continues its run in parks across the city, a New York tradition. On Thursdays, the River & Blues Fest offers free concerts in Battery Park City, right on the Hudson.

Two specific dates are worth noting:

  • Wednesday, July 15: To mark National Hot Dog Day, the New York Hot Dog King is teaming up with a few brands to hand out free hot dogs.
  • Thursday, July 16: Madison Square Park is throwing an all-day celebration for one of its newer trees. It is called the Moon Tree.

If the heat is too much, the Brooklyn Public Library has opened a new, free exhibition by artist and children’s book author Christopher Myers called ‘Unbound.’ It runs through December.

Jaywalker is open Thursday through Sunday in Bushwick.
