This Week In NYC

It is difficult to escape soccer this summer. The sport has taken over public spaces with a series of free exhibitions, ostensibly timed to some larger tournament.

For the enthusiast, “Legacies of Champions” is a new free exhibition at Rockefeller Center. For the art-minded, “Football is Freedom” at Mercer Labs is a large immersive exhibition, also free. You do not need to know the offside rule to attend the latter.

You don’t need to know the offside rule to get swept up in “Football is Freedom.”

Other Diversions

For those who prefer their summer entertainment without a ball, the city offers its usual free programming. Outdoor music and movies are reliable options.

  • The River & Blues Fest, which brings free concerts to the Hudson waterfront in Battery Park City on Thursday nights.
  • The MTA’s series of 50 free outdoor performances, which moves subway platform musicians into Midtown plazas for the summer.
  • The Movies with a View series, which continues its run of films beneath the stars in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
  • A screening of the 1949 MGM musical “On the Town” at the Battery, a film that is emphatically New York.

Some movies are set in New York. Others are New York.

For something different, the Pancakes & Booze Art Show returns on Thursday. It is an art show that hands you a pancake. The premise is straightforward.

The week offers several ways to pass an evening. Jaywalker is open Thursday through Sunday in Bushwick.
