This Week In NYC
New York hits the mute button on traffic for a few hours this week. NYC Summer Streets returns, opening up long stretches of the city to pedestrians and cyclists. It is a rare opportunity to occupy the avenues without the usual soundtrack of car horns and idling engines.
Out of Doors
The city’s parks are also active. SummerStage, a summer tradition, is turning 40 and continues its season of free concerts and performances across the five boroughs. For a quieter evening, the season for watching films on a lawn is in full effect. There are several options, all of them free.
- In Central Park, a new documentary covers the story of Flaco, the Eurasian eagle-owl that famously escaped from the zoo in 2023.
- In Midtown, Paramount+ Movie Nights are back on the lawn at Bryant Park, running every Monday.
- In Brooklyn, Movies with a View offers its usual reliable pairing: a film screening set against the backdrop of the Manhattan skyline.
A 65-foot hot dog has returned to Times Square. Subtlety has no place there.
For those who prefer their culture with a roof, the summer edition of NYC Restaurant Week is underway. It provides an occasion to try a prix-fixe menu at restaurants that might otherwise be out of reach. Closer to home, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music presents its free Midsummer Nights series, transforming neighborhood gardens into jazz clubs.
Jaywalker is open Thursday through Sunday in Bushwick.
